Our members live in a collection of small to medium sized communities that populate the mid section of Vancouver Island. These communities have distinct personalities which they celebrate at community events. Family Day in Qualicum Beach is one of those events. It brings together a mix of community groups from tap dancers to weavers and spinners. Rain or shine our guild has taken part in Family Day for many years. This year it was sunny. Our cheer leader is showing her appreciation.

We love this event and the enthusiastic group of families that always show up. It is delightful to watch the children most of whom are shy at first and a bit reluctant to try anything. With a bit of encouragement they soon become fascinated with the process of making yarn or cloth.

Events like this are a great way to help keep the crafts alive, to build an appreciation of the "made by hand" label and to introduce people to a satisfying past time.

OUR GIGANTIC GARAGE/YARD SALE

Our next "public" event is a new for us but not for most people. We are having a garage/yard sale! A gigantic sale too big to fit in the garage alone. This is a fund raiser to help finance our educational programs and resource centre. Members have been purging their homes for the last month and as a result we will have truck loads of stuff to sell and I am not kidding. There will be collectables, house hold and garden items, tools, furniture, children's items and so much more.

You can help us to simplify our lives while recycling for the good of the planet and even find yourself a bargain by coming. That gives you three reasons to be there, so copy the following information.

About Us

The Qualicum Weavers and Spinners Guild has been part of the Oceanside artisan community since 1991. The guild evolved from a small group of students of noted local weaver Elaine Duncan to over 70 members. The group promotes the fibre arts through information sharing, demonstrations and workshops. The group meets the fourth Monday of the month at Qualicum Commons in Qualicum Beach to exchange ideas and learn. Much of the learning occurs in the form of show and tell with individual artisans sharing their experiences. Study groups, workshops and mentoring all support the guild's goal of fostering personal growth in the fibre arts. The guild is a member of the Oceanside Arts Council, The Association of North West Weaving Guilds and the Guild of Canadian Weavers.

ELEGANT THREADS

Elegant Threads is the annual show and sale of the Qualicum Weavers and Spinners. It features wearable art, unique accessories, heirloom linens, and one of a kind items. Everything is hand crafted by members of the guild.

September Workshops

Introduction of Hand Weaving on a Loom This 3 day course covers the basics of weaving on a 4 harness loom. Looms and materials will be provided. No previous experince necessary. Class size is limited to 5 for indivudal attention.

October Workshops

Beginner Spinning Level 2, What comes next? This 2 day workshop will build on our introduction to spinning classes, participants will learn different methods of drafting woolen versus worsted. Spinning wheels will be available.

Dates, October 5&6

Introduction to the Drop Spindle, this one day course will teach you the ancient art of creating yarn with a simple tool, the drop spindle. You can use your own spindle and rovings or purchase them at the workshop.

Cost, members $80, non-members $100

Date, October 7, 10 to 3:30 This class is now full.

3D Needle Felting, this half day course will cover the basics of dry needle felting to create a sculptured piece No experience is necessary. Participants will create their own "critter". The instructor will provide a needle felting kit that participants can use on their own after the class.

Wet felted Bowl, In this on day course participants will create a decorative bowl using fleece and a wet felting technique. Participation is limited to allow for individual instruction.

Date, October 25, 10 to 3:30

Illuminated Vase, In this one day course participants will create a decorative vase that can be turned into an illumination. Participation is limited to allow for individual instruction

Unless stated otherwise, all in-person workshops take place in the guild studio at 744 Primrose Street in Qualicum Beach

QWSG REFUND POLICY

If a participant withdraws from the workshop more than 10 days before the date of the workshop they are granted a refund, less a $10 administration fee and their materials fee if applicable. If a participant withdraws from the workshop less than 10 days before the start of the workshop, there is no refund.

If the QWSG cancels a workshop, all particpants get a full refund. If QWSG reschedules a workshop, each registered participant is offered a spot in the rescheduled workshop. If they choose not to attend on the new date they get a full refund.

Guild Events

General Meetings

We meet on the last Monday of the month from January to June and from September to December. Business meetings alternate with a themed meet up.

The next general business meeting will be on September 23rd starting at 10:00 am. Bring a mug for coffee and something for show and tell. Guests are always welcome at our general meetings.

Note, in lieu of a business meeting in June we will be having a pot luck lunch and a stash sale. After that we will take a break from regular general meetings until September 23rd.

OTHER EVENTS

During the summer we plan to have dye days, a work bee and other small group activities. They will not be posted here.
